Goebbert’s Corn Box and Corn Pit

Dive Into the Most Unique Playground on the Farm

At Goebbert’s Farm & Garden Center, we’re known for creating experiences that families remember, and few attractions spark as much laughter and joy as our Corn Box. Picture a corn pit: the sensory fun of a sandbox, but instead of gritty sand, you’re surrounded by thousands of golden, glimmering kernels of dried corn.

The Corn Box isn’t just a playground. It’s a farm-inspired adventure where kids dig, scoop, and roll through mountains of smooth corn kernels while parents can’t resist joining in. It’s one of those simple pleasures that perfectly captures the spirit of fall at Goebbert’s. You’ll find it right beside other family favorites like Little Farmer’s Play Yard and Animal Land.

What Exactly Is a Corn Box?

A Corn Box, sometimes called a corn pit, is a giant play pit filled with clean, dried corn kernels, a farm-themed twist on a sandbox that feels distinctly autumn. When you step in, the kernels gently shift beneath your feet, cool and soft to the touch. The sound of the corn rustling and flowing adds to the relaxing, almost mesmerizing atmosphere.

Kids love digging, burying their legs, and running their hands through the corn like a sensory treasure hunt. Even adults often describe it as oddly soothing. Whether you’re lounging, scooping, or watching your little ones laugh until sunset, our Corn Box delivers pure fall fun. For even more playful attractions, explore our Fall Festival attractions or take a stroll through the Corn Stalk Maze.

Locally Sourced and Farm-Fresh

True to Goebbert’s roots, our Corn Box corn comes from a local source right here in Illinois. While it looks good enough to eat, it’s not edible. It’s dried and cleaned specifically for play.

We chose corn over sand because it ties perfectly into the farm theme of our Fall Festival. After all, what’s more “Goebbert’s” than celebrating the harvest with a play area made from one of Illinois’ most iconic crops?

How Big Is the Corn Box?

Big enough for plenty of giggles and golden fun! We actually have two Corn Boxes on the farm:

  • The larger Corn Box measures approximately 35 feet by 25 feet, ideal for families and groups.
  • The smaller Corn Box spans 15 feet by 25 feet, perfect for younger visitors.

Together, the two corn pits hold around 1,500 bushels of corn. That’s a whole lot of kernels! There’s plenty of room to play, dig, and explore without feeling crowded, even on busy weekends.

Why Corn Instead of Sand?

We get this question all the time, and the answer is simple: corn just fits. When we first saw a corn box at another farm years ago, we instantly knew it belonged at Goebbert’s. It connects directly with our agricultural roots, complements our Pumpkin Patch, and adds a one-of-a-kind experience to our lineup of family attractions.

Besides, corn feels soft, smells great, and doesn’t stick to your clothes the way sand does. It’s cleaner, cozier, and 100% farm-approved.

Who Loves the Corn Box the Most?

The truth? Everyone! While we designed the Corn Box with children in mind, parents often find themselves slipping off their shoes and joining the fun.

We do recommend that small children be supervised, since the corn kernels are small and can easily get everywhere. But once they’re in, good luck getting them out. The only limit is our closing time at 6:00 p.m. when the Corn Box winds down for the evening.

Corn Pit Safety Tips for Kids

We keep the Corn Box clean, safe, and fun for all ages. To make the most of your visit, we ask that guests follow a few simple guidelines:

  1. No throwing corn: even the softest kernels can sting when tossed.
  2. Remove jewelry such as wedding rings before entering: they can easily get lost in the kernels.
  3. Supervise little ones closely, especially toddlers who might be tempted to taste the corn.
  4. Shoes optional: most guests prefer barefoot or socks for comfort (and easy cleanup).
  5. Keep the kernels inside the box so the fun stays right where it belongs.

The Corn Box a Must-Visit

There’s something magical about sinking into a sea of golden kernels while the autumn breeze carries the scent of donuts and cider across the farm. Still wondering if you should try it? Here’s why our guests keep coming back year after year:

  • It’s unique to the season: you can’t experience it anywhere else quite like at Goebbert’s.
  • It encourages sensory play for kids and stress-free relaxation for parents.
  • It’s perfectly photo-worthy (trust us, you’ll want a few pictures of this!).
  • It’s part of a full day of adventure alongside wagon rides, the corn stalk maze, and more.
  • It’s included with admission to the Fall Festival, making it one of the best family values around.

A Fall Tradition You’ll Treasure

The Corn Box has quickly become one of our most-loved attractions at Goebbert’s Farm. It’s playful, sensory, and entirely unique, a reminder that sometimes the simplest joys make the best memories.

Whether you’re three, thirty, or just young at heart, we invite you to kick off your shoes, dive in, and let the golden kernels carry you into the spirit of the season.
