Top 10 Healthy Outdoor Activities for Kids in Fall
Cool air, crunchy leaves, rosy cheeks: fall is basically nature saying, “go play.” At Goebbert’s Farm & Garden Center in South Barrington, that play turns into easy movement, fresh-air learning, and exercise. Our season-long Fall Festival keeps everything in one place, so you can spend less time planning and more time making memories (and grabbing donuts).
1) Pumpkin Patch Warm Up
Simply finding a pumpkin can be your first workout warm-up in itself to start the day. Your kids will zigzag through rows and rows of pumpkins and fall decor. Have your little ones compare stems, and practice “pumpkin skills” (How many pumpkins are there? Pumpkin Math. And just how big is too big to carry?).
Give each child a role, pumpkin spotter, pumpkin lifter, and cart captain, so everyone’s moving and nobody’s “bored.” Let them choose a “project pumpkin” for carving and a smaller one for room décor.
Pro tips:
- Wagons are a back-saver! You’ll thank yourself later.
- You don’t always have to carve them – stickers, paint, and markers work too!
2) Teamwork Tactics in the Corn Stalk Maze
A maze isn’t just fun. It’s a strategy-building activity for the whole family. Rotate leaders, set checkpoints, and treat wrong turns as learning opportunities. This simple activity helps you build communication, problem-solving skills, and a little perseverance along the way.
Every step through the maze fosters teamwork and grit, making it more than just about reaching the exit. It’s about the shared effort, laughter, and lessons learned together.
Ready to Start?
Turn any maze into a family adventure. Build skills, share laughs, and enjoy the journey together!
Snack moment: Celebrate a successful escape with a apple cider donut or a soft pretzel from the food lineup before your next adventure.
3) Wagon-Ride Reset (Active Rest)
After the maze, a wagon ride is the perfect cooldown: you’re still outdoors, still exploring, and still together. Just seated. Use the rolling break to plan your next stop: animals, play zones, or a corn box. The last ride leaves at 5:30 PM, so time it right.
4) Animal Land Safari Walk
Kids learn by noticing, and they’ll notice everything in Animal Land: how goats balance, how camels kneel, how zebras communicate with flicks and ears. Spoon-feeding at select pens builds gentle hands and calm confidence. It’s active, curious, and quietly educational.
5) Eye-to-Eye at the Giraffe Barn
Experience the awe-inspiring moment of standing eye-to-eye with a giraffe. Our facility provides elevated platforms, accessible by stairs or ramp, for an intimate encounter. Prepare your camera; these gentle giants are quick, so capture the moment on the first try.
Memory booster: Ask kids to describe the giraffe’s tongue color and spots while you stroll, recalling details helps memories stick.
6) Big-Body Play (Jumping Pillow + Corn Box)
Looking for safe and exciting activities for children? Our Jumping Pillow is the perfect solution, designed to provide a secure space for kids 32–54″ to release their energy through bouncing fun.
Innovative Sensory Play
Enhance sensory and motor skills with our Corn Box: a creative alternative to the traditional sandbox. It’s farm-inspired and designed to improve core balance while keeping kids engaged.
Active Play with Purpose
Encourage climbing, exploration, and imaginative play in the Little Farmer’s Play Yard. With opportunities for pretend “work” and physical activity, it’s a great way to keep kids entertained and active.

Smart pacing: Alternate “high energy” (jumping pillow) with “low energy” (wagon or animals) so kids stay happy all day.
7) Cheer-ercise at the Pig Races
Pick a favorite, Kermit the HOG, Miss Piggy, Kevin BACON, and let your voice do some friendly sprinting. Expect laughter, a little drama, and the universal joy of cheering together. It’s exercise for lungs and smiles.
Very important sidenote: The champion’s prize at Goebbert’s is a donut, so it’s only fair to “support the arts” at the bakery case afterward.
8) Brave the 10-Room Haunted House
Designed for school-age kids, the haunted house is spooky-but-smiley. Short bursts of walking, a few quick starts and stops, and lots to talk about when you step back into the light.
Nervous kiddo? Make them “flashlight captain” or the official “door opener”: participation without pressure builds confidence.
9) STEM in the Wild: Gem Mining + Duck Derby
At our gem mining station, hands-on learning takes center stage. Young explorers can sift, sort, and uncover treasures while engaging with color, texture, and discovery. It’s an exciting way to spark curiosity and scientific thinking.
The Duck Derby takes the fun even further, introducing cause-and-effect through a friendly race. It’s all about interactive play combined with valuable lessons.
10) The (Very) Fun Food Circuit
Healthy kids stay happy with well-timed fuel, and ours is delicious. Admittedly, some of our treats are a bit delectable, but all fresh and made right here on our farm!
Plan a lunch stop at the Red Barn Café & Bakery (open daily 9am–6pm, closing at 3pm on Oct 31), where you can keep things simple with a chicken sandwich or make it cozy with mac & cheese. Kids love the Happy Jack Hot Dog Meal or Happy Jack Mac & Cheese Meal (toy included), and grown-ups can call dibs on a cheeseburger or chili cheese dog if the mood strikes.
Save room for bakery legends: World-Famous Apple Cider Donuts, frosted pumpkin cookies, caramel apples, and a pie lineup that ranges from Happy Jack Pumpkin to Down Home Apple, Aunt Patty’s Pecan, Dutch Apple, and Caramel Apple Nut.
If you’re timing a weekend visit, weave in kettle corn and roasted sweet corn between attractions. And for a sweet intermission, the Sweets & Treats stand serves Goebbert’s Signature Drink, apple cider slushies, and warm caramel apple chips: the kind of pick-me-up that makes the next round at the Jumping Pillow easy.
Easy button: Scan the whole lineup anytime on the food & drink page. And if your deciding between donuts now, or donuts later, trust us, you’ll want both.
Why Goebbert’s Outdoor Activities Are So Fun
Every item blends movement (walking, jumping, balancing), sensory input (textures, sounds, fresh air), and confidence-building (maps, decision-making, and brave-but-safe thrills). You’re building coordination and family teamwork: without turning the day into a checklist. At Goebbert’s, it’s healthy outdoor play first.
Quick Planner (so it’s easy)
- Layers + closed-toe shoes win the day.
- Small daypack: wipes, sanitizer, a spare hoodie, and room for a pie you “weren’t going to buy.”
- Pick two must-dos, let the rest unfold, and pencil in at least one food break before naps get involved.
Get Your Tickets
Save a few bucks by ordering online. Most core attractions are included with general admission; a few experiences are optional add-ons. Check the Fall Festival details for hours and what’s open the day you come, then set your first stop based on kid excitement levels (Is time for giraffes or donuts?-is a valid debate).
We’ll be here with fresh air, friendly faces, and something warm from the oven: see you on the farm.
